Amid reports of fissures within the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) over various issues such as fixing responsibility for price rise, introduction of Bt brinjal and a partial rollback of fertilizer subsidy, the Congress has sought to downplay the differences. In the editorial of the latest edition of Congress Sandesh - the official mouthpiece - the party took note of these differences but brushed them aside as part and parcel of coalition governments. “Some practical difficulties in coordination among the Prime Minister’s Office and various Ministries are natural in coalition governments,” the editorial noted while dwelling on internal challenges facing the Congress-led government at the Centre.

Interestingly, the latest issue of Congress Sandesh came out on a day when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh convened a meeting between Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Minister of State for Science & Technology, Prithviraj Chavan, and Minister of State for Environment & Forests Jairam Ramesh to iron out differences over the Bt brinjal issue.
